RNG can permanently mess with you at the start too when you're most vunable.
As long as you're decisively winning the encounters, you can avoid starting on the death spiral. Someone takes a crit which causes them to go to death's door which causes stress which causes someone to be tested which causes more stress which causes them to miss actions which then leads to more damage and then death. In combat, you're generally going to want to alpha strike and kill at least one of your foes as quickly as possible to reduce incoming damage because damage is usually the cause for my groups to go into death spiral. Any class not mentioned probably falls in the middle. Hellions, Crusaders, Leapers and Vestals are good. Plague Doctors, Jesters, Gravediggers are bad. There are certain classes that are more powerful than others and the game gets remarkably easier once you have a team made up of the good classes instead of the bad ones. If you're having issues, the most likely problem is that your party composition is off.
